Scruggs Woodwinds

Scruggs Woodwinds: Retail, Repair, and Academy. Providing professional accessories, expert instrument services, and college-level jazz education for the Atlanta music community.

Retail

Scruggs Woodwinds serves as a comprehensive music retail hub designed to support the needs of both students and professional musicians. The center offers an extensive range of essential accessories, including reeds, stands, and cleaning supplies for woodwinds, brass, and string instruments. Strategically located to serve local schools such as Decatur High and Beacon Hill Middle, the shop maintains a dynamic inventory that is updated monthly based on customer requests and the regular needs of players performing at Churchill Grounds or taking lessons on-site.

Private Instruction

Led by veteran saxophonist Will Scruggs, our private lesson program offers expert instruction in saxophone technique and jazz theory for students of all ages. With over 20 years of professional experience and a Master’s in Jazz Studies, Will provides a curriculum that has successfully placed students in elite programs like GMEA All-State and the Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra. Graduates of his studio have gone on to earn scholarships at prestigious institutions worldwide, including Berklee College of Music, the New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and the New School in NYC.

Services

Beyond retail, the facility provides expert instrument repair and sales services overseen by leading industry professionals. The repair department, designed by Metro Atlanta woodwind expert Sam Skelton, features a team of skilled technicians available for both on-site repairs and off-site specialized servicing. To keep the community connected, customers are notified via text or email regarding specific technician availability, such as string or woodwind specialists. Additionally, Scruggs Woodwinds offers a practical consignment program for instrument sales, providing parents and students with professional guidance on high-quality instrument acquisition.

Academy

The core of the center’s mission is its community jazz academy, which offers college-level coursework and high-caliber instruction to the community. Starting in Fall '26, the academy will generate a vibrant educational environment through group classes, ensembles, and individual lessons. Instructors also engage directly with local schools to share these educational opportunities with young musicians. For those needing a place to hone their craft, the facility offers rentable practice spaces for students and small ensembles, all coordinated through the on-site operations manager.
